Abstract

The effects due to the presence of infill panels on the seismic behaviour of framed buildings has been investigated in the framework of two research programmes in support of Eurocode 8. A first series of pseudodynamic tests was conducted on a full-scale four-storey reinforced concrete frame. The frame was tested bare and equipped with both regular and irregular infill patterns. The results confirmed the importance of the panels in the behaviour of the frame. A second programme was aimed at assessing newly proposed design rules for infilled frames. As a part of the experimental programme, the same seismic input was applied twice, resulting in a dramatically different response. The importance of the initial conditions and the difficulties in specifying the initial state of the panels are discussed.
