Isotopic analysis as an official method setting up an European wine databank
Following the adoption by the EU of the SNIF-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method for detecting enrichment of grape musts and derivatives as it was decided to build a data bank on European wines. The data bank contains the deuterium isotope ratios of ethanol from authentic wines taken from the wine producing countries in the European Union starting from the 1991 vintage. The JRC laboratory of Ispra is charged with the elaboration and validation of the data with the collaboration of official laboratories of the member states. The different steps for the preparation of authentic samples (grape collection, vinification, distillation, NMR measurements and wine compositional analysis) are considered for this validation. The geographical and pedicultural (vineyard location, variety, vintage, soil) parameters are also included in the data bank.
