Abstract

A 3-dimensional ocean hydrostatic, finite volume, free surface ocean model is presented. The vertical mixing is parameterized in terms of a k-l turbulence model. A parameterization of near interface transport of momentum and temperature is formulated on the basis of assumption of universal behaviour. The time integration scheme is based on the mode splitting approach and partial analytical solution with regard to Coriolis term. The explicit formulation of most of the terms allows efficient and simple parallellization through domain decompositioning with barrier synchronization. Simple optimizations to reduce wall clock time are described. The model capabilities are illustrated on two oceanographic examples - simulations of North Atlantic circulation and of upwelling near the North-West Africa coast.
