Abstract

A 4D-VAR data assimilation method involving an ocean primitive equation model and its adjoint, using satellite sea surface temperature observations has been successfully implemented and applied in an open boundary upwelling region and North Atlantic Ocean. The data assimilation procedure is applied for two different real applications: firstly on a nested window along the coast of west Mauritania in the vicinity of Cap-Blanc and secondly on the whole North Atlantic Ocean basin. In both cases the assimilated data are observations of sea surface temperature. High data quality has prompted the necessity of developing more realistic and reliable algorithms to detect sea surface temperature in an improved way. The results obtained showed good agreement with the surface observations and with the physics characteristic for the studied areas.
