This report summarizes the current state-of-play of the thematic network, European land-ocean interaction studies (ELOISE) which is implemented within the environment and climate, marine science and technology (MAST) and international cooperation (INCO) research programmes of the European Commission. It describes, up to the present, the planning and execution of ELOISE since its inception in 1994, its objectives, its management and organization and its content. Currently ELOISE comprises 13 shared-cost and 2 concerted action projects involving 115 partners in 16 countries around Europe (excluding the EROS 21 project). Details of these projects and of cross-project working groups set up within ELOISE are also given. The document also describes the efforts made within the European Commission to facilitate coordination between the projects and with similar activities underway at national and at international level. Finally, the report outlines the planning of ELOISE Phase II and beyond.
