Time interval measurements and deadtime corrections in coincidence experiments
The analysis of the time interval distributions of output signals from detectors, electronics and coincidence multi-parameter arrangements is a very useful tool for investigating deadtime behaviour. Such measurements allow not only the deadtime to be determined but also inconsistencies in the pulse timing, discrepancies in partial deadtimes of complex electronic systems and other irregularities to be revealed. In this paper, the useful applications of time interval distribution measurements are discussed. Furthermore, simplified formulae are derived and checked by experiments for the deadtime corrections to be applied to the results of neutron time of flight (TOF) measurements using the Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt multi-angle spectrometer.
