The report concentrates on digital media, which these days would often include pre-press, but increasingly provides a framework for interactivity, involving creators, intermediaries or users. The principal objectives of the study can be summarized as follows:

- To understand the maturity and to assess the potential impact of technology on the development of interactive digital media over the period to 2003;
- To analyse the technology gap between what is needed by media companies, media distributors and their customers, versus what is available and usable;
- To identify crucial areas of unmet and potential needs on which the 5th RTD Framework Programme could concentrate its spending.
