The main objectives of the Tournemire tunnel project studies concern argillaceous formations, possibly under consideration for radioactive waste disposal. The research programme aimed to characterize possibilities and processes of fluid transfer through out domerian and toarcian marls and shales, at different scales of time and space, based on liasic formations cross cut by the tunnel. Major geological, stratigraphic, tectonic and hydrogeological characteristics of the site are summarized, as well as the in situ works which have been performed in order to carry out the research programme. From these data, different possibilities of fluid transfers have been investigated, both in the laboratory from cores and with in situ tests from boreholes. Finally, identification of possible natural transfers within the clay formation, at larger scales of time and space are presented.
