Abstract

The first commercial nuclear power plant in Germany, the Gundremmingen KRB A 250 MWe boiling water reactor, was chosen in 1989 as one of the four pilot projects in the European Commissions 1989-93 programme on the decommissioning of nuclear installations. The report describes the dismantling of various contaminated components, for example steam generators, heat exchangers and activated components from inside the reactor pressure vessel. It also describes the experience obtained with various thermal and mechanical cutting tools with the necessary handling devices and manipulation equipment to carry out the work under water. The manpower needed, the occupational radiation doses, the amounts of generated waste and the developments in waste minimization are included.
