A system to guide analyses of nuclear material of unknown origin is described. It consists of a relational table structure installed in the framework of an ORACLE database system and a retrieval algorithm which is implemented as a graphical user interface. The system allows one to perform a retrieval procedure with step-by-step narrowing of the potential origin and intended use of an unknown nuclear material. Data include macroscopic parameters, main element and isotope contents as well as impurity concentrations which, as specification limits combined with real values, allow in many cases a probability-based exclusion of a large range of origins.
