Monitoring the sustainability of Europe's urban areas: The MURBANDY project
This article describes the monitoring urban dynamics project (MURBANDY). MURBANDY aims to provide information on urban areas that will be used by various Directorates General of the European Commission for managing Europe's landscapes. MURBANDY will provide a synoptic view of Europe's urban agglomerations. Structural changes in urban and peri-urban (land around the cities) areas will be measured and analysed in order to characterize past and future trends of urban development. The spatial distribution and the quality of the urban environment and its immediate surroundings are the subjects of this study.
