Abstract

This project is concerned with the development of pulsed magnetic resonance techniques for coal characterization. The standard analytical tests, developed for traditional markets such as carbonization, have not kept pace with recent changes in the pattern of coal utilization. There is a need for new coal characterization techniques which are both cost-effective and capable of predicting the performance of coals of differing geographical origin in a variety of utilization processes. However, coal structure still represents a major challenge, even to modern spectroscopic methods. Two of the techniques studied involve aspects of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), while the third is concerned with electron spin resonance (ESR).
