Abstract

Orthotropic steel decks are used in long span bridges where low deadweight is an important factor, and in lifting bridges for the same reason, and may provide an economic solution for some shorter span road and rail bridges. Orthotropic decks are not covered by most bridge design codes principally because the stress analysis and fatigue classification of the welded connections are too complex. It was the aim of this research programme to rectify this situation by confirming the fatigue classification of the welded connections, advising on good design detailing and giving guidance on the development of design rules. This report covers the fourth and final phase of the research.
