Splits are geometrical disturbances frequently affecting coal seams in the West-phalian coal basins of Western Europe. These splits have an adverse effect on coal mining, which is generally reflected in an important production loss and in a deterioration of the coal quality. The expert system proposed here aims at predicting coal seam splits, based on a whole spectrum of geological parameters (sensu lato) and on the direct or indirect relationships which occur between those parameters (so-called laws or markers). The latter parameters have various origins, concerning geometrical, stratigraphical, sedimentological, paleoecological, petrographical, palynological, geochemical and physico-chemical characteristics of the coal-bearing deposits. They are essentially derived from geologists experience and from the experience of researchers in the fields of coal exploration and coal production.
