Abstract

In the construction of facilities incorporating combined cycle technology, corrosion is a central problem. At high temperatures, alkali metal release is one of the main reasons for corrosive processes. In combination with sulphates, alkali salts deposit on hot plant parts which leads to a decrease of the overall plant efficiency or, in the worst case, to the damage of the equipment. Within an EC funded JOULE-THERMIE project (JOF3-CT95-0010) a market study has been performed concerning the availability of gas sensors with special focus on alkali sensors, and the future marketing possibilities promised after successful development of such sensors. The study contains a survey of the worldwide state-of-the-art of alkali measurements. It then describes three new European developments on on-line diagnostics of alkali and assesses their future marketing chances with instrument manufacturers, plant manufacturers and plant operators to use these new developments for future application in advanced coal fired power plants.
