Abstract

Instabilities occur in nearly all plasmas ranging from laboratory to those that occur astrophisically. Numerical studies to investigate the current and beta limit in low aspect ratio tokamaks are presented, though the methods are applicable to a wide variety of situations. Equilibrium and stability codes CAXE and KINX were used taking into account the separatrix at the plasma boundary. Accessibility of the second region of ballooning mode stability in low aspect ratio plasmas with high elongation and monotonic safety factor profile was examined. The necessary wall position to stabilize external kink modes was estimated. These second stable equilibria demonstrate the potential for very high beta with large bootstrap current fractions in low aspect ratio tokamaks.
