  • A micromechanism-based probabilistic approach for prediction of toughness scater in the haz of thick-plate welds of thermomechanically treated structural steels

Abstract

The general objective of the project was to study the brittle fracture toughness of the coarse-grain heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) of the welds of an API SL X65 TPCM steel used for gas pipe-lines. The target was to develop a probabilistic model for brittle failure prediction from the CGHAZ based on microstructural data (quantitative description of size distributions of CGHAZ metallographic constituents and fraction of CGHAZ crossed by the crack front). The model uses a fracture micromechanism-based local approach to failure analysis and is of general application for ferritic or bainitic steels. The possibility of the presence of several populations of brittle participles in the microstructure is considered in the model, as well as the influence of a ductile propagation of the crack prior to brittle failure.
