Abstract

The aim of this project was to help steel producers to meet stringent requirements in high carbon steels by investigating techniques for the control of decarburization and by providing data for the mathematical models of furnace reheating to develop optimized temperature profiles for the control of decarburization. A computer model was developed of the simultaneous processes of decarburisation and scale formation, taking into account the effects of duplex metallurgical measurements in appropriate diffusion and oxidation experiments. Plant trials were made to validate the laboratory measurements.
