Abstract

The international conference on Progress in Oceanography of the Mediterranean Sea was held in Rome (Italy), November 17-19, 1997. The conference reflected the end of the pilot phase and the start of the second phase of the Mediterranean Targeted Project (MTP), the large interdisciplinary research project in the Mediterranean Sea under the Marine Science and Technology Programme (MAST). The Conference was devoted to:

- Breakthroughs in the oceanography of the Mediterranean Sea;
- The synthesis of existing information and knowledge;
- The exchange of information on national and international research initiatives in the region;
- Research needs in science and technology;
- Enhance research/policy interface;
- Research activities of young scientists.

The chairpersons of the different sessions produced a short report underlining the most interesting points addressed by their respective sessions. These individual reports were merged to form this conference report.
