Abstract

Non destructive examination (NDE) during fabrication, pre-service inspection (PSI) and in service inspection (ISI) are considered key issues for the safe use of nuclear energy. In addition, they are an important element of plant lifetime management, which is today a critical item in the decision process on nuclear policies. When looking to the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC's) and to the New Independent States (NIS) operating soviet designed reactors, time has come to establish an industrial co-operation framework with these countries, considering the effectiveness and the adaptability of the European technology. With this in mind, the Directorate General DGXVII for Energy of the EC has created and launched the European Non Destructive Examination Forum (ENDEF). The major functions of the Forum are discussed here.
