The report reviews the fracture mechanics concepts of codes for the reactor vessel component of light water reactors (LWRs), mainly ASME and RCC-M codes, with the following objectives:

- Definition and classification of various fracture parameters according to some validity criteria;
- Assessment of K(IC) and K(IR) fracture toughness curves of codes, which were established a long time ago. Recent data on base and weldment materials have been analysed in the framework of existant curves. Some recommendations for improvement of codes were stated in the study;
- To establish the basis for a European database of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) materials for future harmonization of codes and standards.
