Finding plasma discharge conditions with favourable confinement properties and understanding the basis of confinement improvement are among the most challenging topics in fusion research. A variety of enhanced confinement modes have already been discovered in stellarators and tokamaks. This paper reports discharges with the longest confinement times observed in the stellarator W7-AS. The objective is to characterize these discharges, to identify the critical parameters and to investigate the physical mechanism leading to confinement improvement.
