Process Tomography for Improved Design, Monitoring and Control of Cyclonic SeparatorsFunded under: ECSC-COALRES 3C
Report on the design of new instrumentation to provide images of the distribution of solids and gas phases within cyclonic separators based upon electrical resistance tomography. Reconstruction algorithms, sensor electronics and sensor hardware were developed to facilitate process tomographic technology to interrogate the internal behaviour of separators. Imaging methods were then used to improve the design of small diameter cyclones less than 50mm and dense medium cyclones. Data was used to allow a parallel development of reliable computational fluid dynamics software, previously impossible to verify using alternative instrumentation technology. Advances in vortex finder design resulted. The design of optimally configured networks of small diameter cyclones for the treatment of ultrafines was also demonstrated based on a cyclone network simulation package and the feasibility of using the tomographic method for on-line monitoring and control of separators was established.
