Many coal liquefaction processes leading to good yields show only a moderate hydrogen consumption. It is therefore possible that mixtures of hydrogen and an inert gas could be used as the hydrogenating atmosphere, which could provide economical advantages and also allow savings and operating advantages in the equipment and material related with process safety. This project set out to design, assemble and test a hydrogenation reactor to investigate this hypothesis and to develop new procedures for analysing the liquefaction products. Two different coals were selected and the process of coal liquefaction was studied by varying the experimental conditions to measure the effects of each variable on the reaction. The equipment selected for the reactor design allowed a greater control and operation monitoring but uncovered the chronic undependability of the heating subsystem. Yields were reasonably high and hydrogen consumption was always small. This suggests the possibility of using low hydrogen atmospheres for coal liquefaction. The development of improved analytical methods for the extraction and analysis of the liquefaction products allows a faster, more reliable character of the liquefaction products.
