The increasing use of high water based hydraulic fluids (HFA fluids), or clear water, in underground drive technology requires the development of suitable water hydraulic components, which at the beginning of this project were unavailable. Such components are subjected to premature wear due to the poor tribological properties of these fluids. This results in high investment and maintenance costs. In this project components suitable for water hydraulics have been examined and further developed, including various designs of pumps, motors, pressure valves, control valves and cylinders. Two power compensation systems for multimotor drives also underwent further development and testing. The project concludes that there is no prospect in the market at this time to obtain small sized and relatively inexpensive components for operation on water or HFA fluids that are comparable to the controllable displacement systems and valves currently used in oil hydraulics. Important components are still lacking for the conversion and operation of existing mining machinery to clear water or HFA fluid. The development work done however could create the initial prerequisites for reaching that aim.
