Abstract

A GD-OES system has been developed for the rapid and quantitative analysis of the surface state of steel products and components and the strength and usefulness of this approach for the analysis of surface coatings has been demonstrated. The approach has been validated on surface coatings such as Zinc, Nickel-Zinc, Aluminium-Zinc-Silicon and other very similar types and has shown to be highly accurate if correctly calibrated. Quantitative results on hot rolled steel show that this technique also permits accurate quantification of the oxygen content of an oxide. In addition, the importance of a correct calibration procedure has been demonstrated, in particular for the detection of low concentrations where the correct subtraction of background signal is of great importance. The project has shown that quantitative depth profile analysis by GD-OES is a powerful analytical tool that can give accurate results for a wide range of important applications within the steel industry.
