Intercomparison of Trichothecene analysis and feasibility to produce certified calibrants and reference material
Prior to the intercomparison study, the purity of trichothecene batches from different sources have been investigated in order to find suitable batches of trichothecene to prepare calibrants from. A protocol for the routine evaluation of purity and concentration of trichothecenes has also been developed and tested in the participating laboratories. These results were used to prepare calibrants for the intercomparison of trichothecenes in solution and extracts. Solutions with mass concentrations unknown to the participating laboratories of the trichothecenes nivalenol, deoxynivalenol, HT-2 and T-2 toxin were also prepared. The trichothecenes in the calibrants and the solution were shown to be stable for at least 4 weeks at temperatures from -180C to +400C and that the mass concentrations of the trichothecenes were homogenous within and between prepared ampoules of the calibrants and solution. Blank Wheat Material was also prepared and shown to be free (above 20µg/kg) from trichothecenes. The intercomparison study is outlined in the report and the prepared materials detailed above have been distributed to the participating laboratories for analysis. The results are to be reported before 30th November 1997.
