Abstract

The automation of measurement systems in mining requires efficient methods of transmission of the data collected by these sensors. Many operations use bus systems to transmit data in series, which enables transmission of data to the integrated data gathering equipment within bus systems. To aid the transfer of data from sensors to data-gathering equipment, a fast near area (up to 50 metres) bus system has been developed within the Sensor-Actor Bus for Unit Automation in Mining project that will serve a superordinate bus system on the MAP/ISU standardized communications network as a conveyor bus. The transmission properties of the sensor/actor bus have been tested, both on a line balancing network and on line underground, and transmission rates of 400kbits/s can be reliably achieved. All the components that were built up within the project were designed to be intrinsically safe and are ready for inspectorates approval. The knowledge gained within this project and some of the components have been used in the intrinsically safe ultrasonic measuring system for the free cross-section area of roadways in mines project.
