Abstract

Shield support for underground coal mining is essential to ensure the safety of workers and operators. Automation of shield supports using electro-hydraulic controls are becoming more desirable. This is because they improve production, reduce danger, improve strata control and reduce debris falls. Electro-hydraulics allow manouevres to be controlled between the cutting machine and the supports. In this type of environment, fast and reliable automatic supports are needed which may optimize output. This can be achieved if controls can automatically adapt to changes in the mining conditions. The partners adapted the electro-hydraulic supports to existing conditions and developed software which can automatically adjust vital parameters. Tests were carried out on 5 coalfaces where factors which affected advancement were recorded. The main aim was to perform the advancement cycle where the shield is moved and reset as fast as possible using the automatic software. In each test, parameters (such as leg pressures) are recorded and used in subsequent runs. If cycle times deteriorate, then parameters can be adjusted to meet the coalface condition. In summary, the software developed can automatically adjust parameters safely, improve advance cycles and is fully adjustable to coalface conditions.
