Cranes in the steel production industry are under heavy duty use, resulting in short life spans of associated ropes. Frequent hauling operations and repeated bending at blocks accelerate deterioration. Current inspections are based on visual observations with no standard criteria of evaluation. This project proposes a new rope maintenance system which is based on electromagnetic inspection system. Defects will monitored using an automatic system to examine, diagnose and control the state of metallic ropes on industrial cranes. Using electromagnetic techniques, the system will be able to detect, identify, classify any defects in the cables. This will help in replacing worn ropes effectively thus optimising their use and improving safety.
