Abstract

In the steelmaking industry, it is important for customers and industry that the steel is of a high standard without any defects. Quality control detection plays an important role in checking for defects. However how defects are identified, by humans or machine, is an important aspect to consider. In the past artificial vision system systems have been developed to show the operator the product on screen for defect indentification. The new system proposed will be able inspect at higher speeds (15 metres per second), inspect Skin-Passed steel (new), classify Skin-Passed steel defects and be opererative in industrial conditions. The defects idenified are superficial, not internal or flatness ones. The system is installed in the Skin-Pass Mill and inspects the strip over the inspection roll, which is the exit deflection roll. The light source (containing a lens, fluorescent tube and light driver) is assembled very close to the inspection roll to obtain optimum resolution.
