Résumé

Tire manufacturers are now decreasing the steel weight in tire reinforcements. To retain the same specifications, thinner wires with higher tensile strengths are needed. To obtain this, the carbon content of the steel may be increased. However, solidification due to axial segregation in the steel may occur resulting in inevitable wire breakage. This project has attempted to quantify the influence of segregation on the microstructure of high carbon steel rods. Six grades or degrees of segregation on high carbon wires which are independent of the elaboration process have been investigated. This method was used in trials and found that the segregation level has a great influence on the drawability of the wire rod. It is also possible to determine a level of segregation for which no dramatically industrial results are obtained.
