This study investigates the formation of Sn/SnOx coatings on iron sheets from organotin compounds. A survey of organotin properties is performed to identify the most promising compounds. Thermogravimetric analysis is then used to investigate the decomposition of organotin compounds where the powdered residue is studied by x-ray analysis. Compounds are also analysed using deposition on iron sheets in two specially designed chambers. The deposits can then be examined for their chemical nature, homogeneity and thickness. This treatment provides an efficient shield against corrosion and behaves as a good prepainter. However repeated depositions on the metal sheets may degrade quality as layers may not adhere properly.
