Experimental facilities for hot testing of a pilot melting cyclone were designed and constructed. 800mm cyclone trials were carried out over 35 trials using over 45 tons of ore. 32 experiments were executed using 800 tons of core on a 2000mm cyclone. For each cyclone ores of 4 different size ranges were prepared to test the effect of particle size on melting, reduction and collection efficiency. The performance of the 800mm pilot cyclone was satisfactory for ores in the range of 100-500 ?m. The 2000mm cyclone performance was as good as the 800mm with an increased throughput factor of 10. A numerical model of the melting cyclone was validated using the experimental results. The model data was used to predict cyclone behaviour at a large scale under increasing operating pressure.
