Abstract

An ultrasonic testing system (CALIDUS) has been developed to detect flaws in hot continuously cast slabs in the steel industry. The ultrasonic signals are transmitted and received through contactless electromagnetic US transducers (EMAT). Rayleigh waves were used to detect near-surface or surface flaws. The ultrasonic prototype system was designed to operate under severe conditions to inspect material for flaws, using the pulse echo method. The probe is compact, heat-resistant and robust enough to use under the most severe in-plant conditions. Due to a change in the production sequence at PSAG, it was not possible to install the system as originally intended.
