Fusion Activities at the Joint Research Centre - Project Review: October 1997 - March 1998
The Institute for Advanced Materials (IAM)'s activities in the field of fusion technology are part of the European Research Programme coordinated by the Fusion Programme Directorate. The Programme's objectives included supporting ITER technological needs for the selection and characterization of materials, including development of a databank. The improvement of tritium related knowledge and technology in the area of operational and environmental safety was also of concern, related to both the fusion next step machine (ITER) and future power reactors. The Programme also developed advanced low activation materials. IAM has three main research areas: material studies; tritium technologies, related to process materials and waste management; and safety and environmental assessments.
