The Environmental Accident Index (EAI) is a model proposed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. It may be used to measure and compare the severity of accidents, ranking them for the EC's Major Accident Reporting System (MARS) database. As with most conceptual models, there is some error associated with parameter values, so some alterations to the model were necessary in order to increase compatibility with the data recorded in the database. A set of indices has been developed, relating to various hazards such as fire and explosion, water contamination, and toxic gas release. The paper proposes different strategies for the incorporation of EAI into the MARS database.
