Abstract

The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) is conducting a major study into the impact of EU regulations on innovation of European industry. The effects of chemical and European Single Market regulations are of particular interest. The relationship between regulatory constraints and innovation are often contradictory. In a highly competitive environment, companies will be strongly influenced towards innovation. If a pro-competitive policy is introduced, however, this may deter companies from co-operating on long-term RTD projects. National regulations may threaten the integrity of the internal market. Consequently, studies have to consider the styles and structures of policy implementation, the framework of regulation, and factors influencing innovation decisions within the organization.
