ISPRAMIX - a three dimensional model for the coastal ocean simulations and satellite data assimilation on parallel computers
High quality scientific information regarding coastal ocean variability is essential for good management of coastal resources. Satellite remote sensing provides useful data on the local area, such as sea surface temperature and sea level, but this type of data only relates to the surface of the sea. Numerical modelling of the coastal environment can provide detailed subsurface data, which may be used in conjunction with remote sensing data to provide vital information on both the present state of the ocean and its future variability. The numerical model ISPRAMIX was developed to be applied together with satellite data, and has been used to study upwelling processes near the North-West African coast. The code was also adapted to run on parallel computers, and has been used to simulate North Atlantic Ocean circulation.
