Atmospheric combustion of Pulverized Coal and Coal Based Blends for Power Generation - Volume IIFunded under: FP3-JOULE 2
The European Union is one of the biggest regions importing bituminous coal. The use of these coals can give rise to specific problems with regard to the milling and combustion behaviour of these coals. A 80kWth turbulent natural gas burner free jet burner was used for coal characterisation studies and volatile release was found to be about 10 time faster when compared to values obtained with electrically heated flow reactors. Combustion experiments using the 0.5MWthIVD semi-industrial pulverised combustion chamber showed that the preparation technique of pulverised coal blending (raw coal or pulverised coal blending) can influence the NOx emission and the unburned carbon in the flue ash. The milling behaviour of the coals was also investigated.
