Isotopic Analysis as an Official Method Setting up an European Wine Databank
Following the adaption by the EU of the SNIF-NMR method for detecting enrichment of grape musts and deriatives (wines, concentrated musts.....) as published in the Commizion Regulation No 2676/90, it was decided to build a data bank on the european wines in order to improve the efficiency of the control of the wine market of europe. The data bank contains the deuterium isotope ratios of ethanol from authentic wines taken from the wine producing countries in the EU starting from the 1991 vintage. The JRC laboratory of Ispra is charged with the elaboration and validation of the data with the collaboration of official laboratories of the member states. The different steps for the preperation of authentic samples (grape collection, vinification, distillation, NMR measurements and wine compositional analysis) are considered for this validation. The geographical and pedicultural (vineyard location, variety, vintage, soil) parameters are also included in the Data Bank. Starting with vintage 1997, the data bank will also contain the isotopic ratio of oxygen 18 of the wine.
