Design and construction of a subsurface flow reed bed testing facility
In order to test the efficiency of subsurface flow reed bed systems a greenhouse-based test facility has been designed and constructed. Fourteen experimental treatment systems, differing for the feeding scheme (horizontal or vertical), for the type of growth medium and for the plant species used , have been placed inside the greenhouse. Each experimental system consists of a 430 1 HDPE tank containing the water to be treated. The water, which is transferred to the treatment tank by means of a peristaltic pump (each pump serving from 3 to 4 systems ),flows through the growth medium and finally returns to the HDPE tank placed on the floor. Control over the water level inside the treatment tanks is achieved through bendable pipes connected to the outlet holes.
