Abstract

Hard coatings of low friction coefficient were synthesized by co-deposition of TiN as the hard phase and MoS2 as the lubricating phase in an arc/magnetron-sputter hybric process.
GAXRD,XPS and EDX investigations showed that the coatings are composed of nano-dispersed MoSx phases in a kristalline TiN-phase. The composition of the lubricating phase and the concentration are strongly dependant on the process parameters like the gas composition (nitrogen/argon ratio) and the power ratios of the arc and sputter sources. Lifetime tests on coated drills have shown a increase in lifetime compared to uncoated drills at fast rates in dry drilling conditions.
