Abstract

The paper illustrates the how to use of certified reference materials, mainly in accordance to ISO Guide 33, on hand of examples of CRM's produced by IRMM's Reference Materials unit. They cover CRM's for trace elements and compounds in various matrices, but also special cases like CRM's for reactor neutron dosimetry and detection of fraud in agriculture. It is also demonstrated that the Jorhem paradox as presented at the BERM-7 Symposium in Antwerp (April 1997) is in fax not a paradox, but only the confirmation of what should be expected on the basis of the present philosophy in matters of certification of reference materials through laboratory intercomparison.
