The tailored blank technique welds steel sheets of dissimilar thickness and/or grades. The choice of materials depends upon the properties of the component to be produced, but the weld must comply with the same requirements of these materials. The metallurgical model developed studies the formability of the tailored blank, based on the finite element method, assessing the properties in the weld bead, in the heat affected zones and in the base materials. A method to determine the parameters required is described, and the calculation of the strains in the whole part including the welded zone. The model can also be used in other fields, such as welds between coils before continuous annealing.
