Experiments in the joining of steel sheet with other metals such as aluminium and copper, and also other steel grades, concentrated on the different joining techniques possible and then the testing of the joint's performance. Adhesive bonding, laser welding, resistance spot welding, clinching, MAG welding and friction welding were used to join the different materials, with accelerated corrosion tests, fatigue tests and crash tests used to measure the result. Of the various joining techniques available, selection depends upon the particular needs of the end application, adhesive bonding producing high fatigue strength results, for example, but a low crash test performance.
