Abstract

Many railway, road and metro-line tunnels are presently being built in seismic prone countries. The tunnels are often located under densely populated areas and require very high standards of safety. On the other hand, there is an increasing awareness of the sensitivity of these structures to seismic actions: even moderate deformation of the tracks may cause train derailing. Moreover, the damage to the tunnel structure is difficult to assess, and a damaged tunnel may not withstand consecutive aftershocks.
