Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

During 1997 the Joint Research Center of Ispra has released a European Database of energy efficient electric motors. The database had to become a tool for promoting new High Efficiency Motors (HEM), and for helping European Utilities for carrying out Demand Side Management (DSM) programmes as a new service to a competative electricity market. The first release (EuroDEEM V.1.0) suffered from some problems, mainly its visual usability and the practical impossibility to be upgraded and maintained. In October 1998 a completely new version (EuroDEEM V.1.1) with many enhancements was released. To improve the user friendliness the visual layout of the application feels like that of the common Windows Explorer interface. A complete companys motor inventory with an energy and economic analysis has been implemented, taking into account also the Utility rates, the type of end-user , speed control systems, and transmission devices. To improve the usability of the database, a guided problem solver module has been developed for the selection of best motor improvement in the companys inventory motor management, and in non-inventory applications.

An updating motor-catalogue procedure has been established between the JRC and the European Motor Manufacturers for rapid and secure database maintenance. The future developments of the software will consist in the implementation of the complete motor chain database, and in particular, a database of variable speed drives, transmission and coupling devices, and system description of end-use. .
