A high level of accuracy is required for the forecasting of natural processes in the coastal zone, due to the social, economical and environmental importance of these areas. Satellite data may be used for initializing computer models of coastal processes, allowing forecasts to be made. Global atmospheric models may be used to force local ocean models, but their coarse resolution does not allow important information about local atmospheric forcing to be retained. A solution to this problem is to use the information from the global atmospheric model for the forcing of a high-resolution local atmosphere model at its lateral boundaries. This project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of a coupled forecast system by combining the ISPRAMIX ocean model and the ETA/NMC limited area model for the Adriatic Sea.
