Abstract

The report outlines future trends within the energy technology field that may arize from the threat of global warming. The extent to which technology can contribute to a possible structural change within energy markets, leading to a less carbon-intensive system, is discussed. The possible mechanisms through which these changes may take place are also considered, together with the conditions that may facilitate the transition. Many of the technologies that may be crucial to energy planners in the future are not currently marketable. Managers could be faced with enormous difficulty if the technologies are to become operable within a competitive energy market, unless measures are taken to facilitate their development. These measures must be viewed as a necessary effort to transform the status of the current world energy situation into a more sustainable scenario.
